Here are a couple of earthquakes recorded with the vertical seismometer here at Bryant Labs. The first is about a 7.0 in Olympia Washington back on February 28th, 2001:

The second is a 3.4 at the Geysers

I'm no expert at picking the P and S onset, so I just cheated by setting the S marker at to give me the distance I knew the quake to be from here.
